The Big Takeover gives its take on SHOTGUN DAISY

It’s not hard to see why this talented New Jersey songstress’s music has appeared on TV shows on AMC, FX, and MTV (like The Hills). Her third album (following 2003’s This is Mine and 2005’s Shadow & Splendor) is filled with slickly-produced, lighthearted, and mainstream-ready pop tunes, each one featuring her sweet, playful coo, which alternately resembles Sheryl Crow, Juliana Hatfield, and Lisa Loeb. Perhaps Rose could take more chances with the song arrangements, most of which are fairly conventional and too overly polished – to wit, even The New York Dolls’ Steve Conte’s guitar-playing on four tracks is barely noticeable! Still, Rose’s charming voice and strong lyrics, especially on vibrant, airy songs like “Hope” and “Wreck at Best,” keep the album consistently listenable and gratifying.

MAVERICK MAGAZINE gives Stacie Rose a STELLAR review!

After listening to SHOTGUN DAISY, the question has to be; why would New Jersey singer songwriter Stacie Rose want to be compared to anyone, even such luminaries as Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow and Bonnie Raitt? Her biography cites all three but the inescapable conclusion is that she is a truly unique talent.

She is neither complete folkie nor rock chick, in truth she walks the line between both with the dexterity of a tightrope walker, neither camp could find anything on SHOTGUN DAISY to justify the cry 'sell out'.

Thankfully, she is also a million miles away from the corporate blandness of radio friendly rock, SHOTGUN DAISY is a look at the world through Stacie Rose's eyes and, believe me, she has a completely different way of looking at things. And it's for that reason that you'll either instantly fall under Stacie Rose's spell or she'll leave you cold and unmoved. SOMEHOW SHOTGUN DAISY doesn't come over as the kind of album you'll grow to love.

But there is an undeniably quirky freshness about the music and not just the prosaically titled Mrs Happy Ever After & Me. A more cynical artist would have added all sorts of black arts to commercialise the hook-laden SHOTGUN DAISY but throughout it retains its innocence.

While Stacie Rose neatly dodges genre definition, SHOTGUN DAISY is not a difficult listen, Find Your Way is delicately tinged with rock while Run Out is the kind of song that could restore your faith in the charts were it to be released as a single. It is very easy indeed to take SHOTGUN DAISY to your heart.

Stacie Rose is one of those artists that don't really have to try too hard to stand out. She is a warm and sympathetic singer but she is also blessed with the imagination to make the most of her gifts. That allows her to take Not Listening and make it completely different from its album mates.

If you're looking for suitable comparisons, then the equally individual Bjork and Tori Amos come to mind but in the end it's best to enjoy Stacie Rose on her terms.

Once in a while I stumble upon a record that has nothing to do with Roots music but that is simply a good singer Songwriter album with a handful of great tunes on it. Shotgun Daisy by Stacie Rose is one of those albums I simply can't ignore! The music is even a little pop driven and reminiscent to Sheryl Crow and other assorted artists

Opener "Find your way" shows immediately to us that Stacie has a lot to offer! A catchy tune full of hooks, with a gentle voice but full of guts! That is without doubt the best way to describe this and many of her songs. "Hope" and "Love Ways" keep on rolling in the same direction and give you good pop-rock tunes that are pleasantly to hear. On "Wreck at Best" we meet a very fragile Stacie that quickly bursts out in an explosive chorus only to return to her fragile state for the next verse! Another tune that sparked my interest was "Hit me in the Head". Her sultry voice above a jazzy, almost hip hop track is quite impressive and is without doubt one of the better tracks on this album. Followed by "Ever Again"a tune that goes even deeper into new music territory and closing with "Worry Free" Shotgun Daisy is a great but underestimated album.

The album is quite impressive even if it is not one of my favourite genres! But looking at the personnel that helped out Mrs Rose things become quite clear! Including people like Gerry Leonard (David Bowie's Music Director & Guitar player), David Patterson (Shawn Mullins and Indigo Girls), Jeff Allen (Avril Lavigne) and many others can only result in a great album but take noe that despite all the big names all songs are written by Stacie Rose herself and that is without doubt the biggest force behind this album.

Stacie Rose is een jongedame uit Rutherford, New Jersey die met het album "Shotgun Daisy" al aan haar derde full-cd toe is. Anders dan bij voorgangers "This is Mine" uit 2002 en "Shadow And Splendor" uit 2005 heeft zij voor deze plaat gekozen voor een meer persoonlijke inbreng in de songteksten. Qua muziekstijl wordt er op "Shotgun Daisy" een mix gebracht van pop, soul en rock met catchy riffs. Voor dit nieuwe album kon zij rekenen op de steun van andere artiesten zoals Shawn Mullins, Steve Conte en Jack Petruzelli. Voor het productiewerk kreeg ze een exquise duo zover om deze job voor haar te klaren: Jeff Allen die eerder werkte met o.a. Roseanne Cash en Avril Lavigne en Robert L. Smith die vroeger voor Rickie Lee Jones en voor David Bowie producties heeft gedaan. De sound van Stacie Rose wordt in de pers vergeleken met Aimee Mann, Sheryl Crow, Jewel en Shawn Colvin. Vocaal is dit zeker terecht maar de liedjes op dit album hebben toch vooral een heel eigen geluid en tonen aan dat Stacie Rose vooral een goede songwriter is. De moderne popsound die ze in haar liedjes hanteert is waar de actuele muziekbusiness naar vraagt en deze songs zullen dus regelmatig op de radio te beluisteren vallen. De rocksong "Find Your Way" en "Love Saves" zijn liedjes met groot hitpotentieel en het album bevat ook enkele tracks die getuigen van een volwassen popgeluid zoals bijvoorbeeld in "Run Out" dat ze in duet brengt met Shawn Mullins en in het knap uitgewerkte liedje "Mr. & Mrs. Happily Ever After". De cd-titel "Shotgun Daisy" is een bijnaam die haar muzikanten haar gegeven hebben en verwijst naar haar gedrevenheid om zoveel mogelijk dingen tegelijk te willen doen. In de twaalf liedjes op dit album toont Stacie Rose dat ze een muzikale kameleon is en er in slaagt om een reeks diverse onderwerpen te selecteren om een liedje over te schrijven. Van zichzelf zegt ze dat ze soms gewoon op straat in haar telefoon een melodie inzingt op het antwoordapparaat, kwestie van de basis voor een nieuw liedje niet te vergeten. Zo ontstonden songs als "Hope" en "Wreck At Best". In de jazzy cd-afsluiter "Worry Free" is ze tekstueel zeer autobiografisch en beschrijft ze met welk gemoed ze liefst zelf door het leven wil gaan: zorgeloos en vrij van problemen. Sfeervolle soulballads worden tenslotte nog geserveerd in "December" en in "Ever Again". Zoals je kan merken is "Shotgun Daisy" een belangrijke stap in de muzikale carrière die Stacie Rose voor ogen heeft. Vastberaden als ze is zal zij er dan ook probleemloos in slagen om een vaste naam in de moderne popmuziek te worden.

Amikor Rose előadói stílusát igyekeznek közismert muzsikusokéhoz hasonlítani, akkor – nemtől függetlenül – Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen és Paul Simon neve merül fel a leggyakrabban. Az énekesnő 2002-ben a This Is Mine címet viselő albumával kapcsolódott be a tengerentúl zenei vérkeringésébe. A folytatásban egy koncertalbum, a This Is Yours (2003) és egy stúdiólemez, a Shadow & Splendor (2005) következett. Az elmúlt három évben Rose inkább az élő előadásokra összpontosított. Az idei évben megtört a „lemezmentes időszak". Néhány héttel ezelőtt jelent meg a nem túl nőies címet viselő Shotgun Daisy című új album, rajta 12 remek saját szerzeménnyel. A korong producere Jeff Allen mellett az a Robert L. Smith, aki olyan nagy kaliberű sztárokkal dolgozott eddig együtt, mint David Bowie és Rickie Lee Jones.
Az énekesnő új albuma számomra egy kicsit Nora Jones világát idézi. Könnyed zene otthoni vagy – ha nem a wattok számítanak, akkor – autóban történő hallgatásra. A stílus valahol a népzene és a pop határmezsgyéjén egyensúlyoz. A Hope-tól a Run Outig, a Black and Blue-tól az Ever Againig azonnal megszerethető, már-már fülbemászó melódiák szerepelnek a lemez „étlapján".
A produkcióban buja könnyedséggel keveredik az akusztikus és az elektronikus hangvilág. Rose nagyon különleges színfolt a poppalettán, gyönyörű hanggal, igazi egyéniséggel. A Shotgun Daisy egy gazdag hangzásvilágú, komoly zenészstábot felvonultató produkció.
Rose – nagy sajnálatomra – szakítva a hagyománnyal, a lemez kísérőfüzetében csak a közreműködő zenészek nevét tünteti fel számonkénti bontásban, a dalok szövegét nem. Egy rövidke mondat az énekesnő honlapjára irányítja a líra után érdeklődőket.

STACIE ROSE is a both a musician and humanitarian, who has a history of releasing her own quality pop material and compilations for various charitable organizations. I have reviewed some of both before, and this time I have the pleasure to pass on her new works in "Shotgun Daisy" (Enchanted, c/o stacierose.com). Stacie has a velvety voice, and her songs are equally as lush, looking at relationships – both positive and negative – with extremely catchy hooks, such as on "Hit Me in the Head," "Mr. & Mrs. Happily Ever After," and "Not Listening," though it's hard to pick a favorite. While they all are better than anything one can hear on mainstream radio these days, which is where a lot of this could be, Stacie needs to be careful not to overproduce her material. Producer Jeff Allen has played bass for Avril Lavigne, and it seems like he's trying to make this sound like "Complicated." Stacie's material is too precious to take the chance to squander. Luckily, her voice and songs rise above it.

Stacie Rose has created a mature and authoritative gem on her third full-length disc augmenting her long-time producer, Robert L. Smith, with co-producer Jeff Allen. There are many stand-out tracks here, "Run Out" has a little nod to Janis Joplin (not in vocal or sound, but in spirit) - very hooky, as is "Mr. & Mrs. Happily Ever After", nice sequencing two as the pair of songs are different but work well together. There's the intriguing "Not Listening", the jazzy and quite moody "December" and "Love Saves" which actually sounds like "Love waves...", a nice little Lady Mondegreen, misheard lyric. You can check out my previous review of Rose's THIS IS MINE CD from 2002 on AllMusic and SHADOW & SPLENDOR. SHOTGUN DAISY is a beautiful component to the triology and points out a good direction for this important artist's future.

Stacie Rose- Shotgun Daisy
It would have been very easy to have tossed this disc aside without a second thought. After all, Stacie Rose creates hummable smooth pop that sounds very similar to thousands of other artists. But instead of throwing this disc to the side we continued spinning it until...the songs eventually had a real impact on us and we realized that we had to cover Shotgun Daisy. True, these songs are very safe and sound very familiar...but in the end the intent behind the music is what makes this album such a pleasing and rewarding spin. Stacie surrounds herself with a multitude of top notch players and she writes songs that could easily be appreciated by the masses. But instead of penning mere fluff, her songs have depth and seem to come from her soul. Add in the fact that this young lady has an absolutely killer voice...and you have a cool, uplifting album that will surely stand the test of time. Smooth pop cuts include "Find Your Way," "Hope," "Wreck At Best," and "Hit Me in the Head." Nice, smooth, hummable stuff... (Rating: 5)
